Complex and Challenging Cases

Experience Where the Situation Is Not Straightforward

Not all penile implant surgery is the same. Some men present with anatomy or a medical history that makes surgery more demanding, and these cases benefit most from a surgeon whose practice is focused on prosthetic and reconstructive urology.

Dr Ross Calopedos is regularly referred complex cases, including patients who have been told their situation is too difficult or who are managing complications after surgery elsewhere.

Situations That Can Make Implant Surgery Complex

Corporal fibrosis, extensive scarring within the erectile chambers, for example after a previous infected implant, priapism or long-standing severe ED

Peyronie’s disease with significant curvature or deformity occurring alongside erectile dysfunction

Previous pelvic surgery or radiotherapy, including after prostate cancer treatment, which can alter anatomy and reservoir placement

Cylinder erosion or device complications from earlier surgery

Infected implants requiring salvage or staged surgery

Penile shortening or loss of length needing reconstructive planning

A Planned, Reconstructive Approach

Complex cases require careful judgement, advanced surgical planning and techniques that go beyond standard implant surgery, including strategies for managing dense scar tissue, correcting curvature at the time of implant surgery, and placing each component safely in altered anatomy. The goal is to restore reliable function while preserving as much length and tissue as possible.

For men with Peyronie’s disease and ED, an implant can address both rigidity and deformity in the same operation. You can read more on the Penile Implants Overview page.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I Was Told My Case Is Too Complex for an Implant. Is That True?

Not necessarily. Complex situations, such as extensive scarring, previous infection, Peyronie’s disease or prior pelvic surgery, require specialist planning and experience, but are often still treatable. A consultation can clarify what is realistic in your specific circumstances.

What Makes a Case Complex?

Factors include corporal fibrosis (scarring inside the erectile chambers), significant curvature or deformity, previous pelvic surgery or radiotherapy, complications from earlier implant surgery, and penile shortening. These influence the surgical approach and planning required.
