Preserving What Still Works
A penile implant sits inside the erectile chambers of the penis. Older techniques often involved aggressively dilating or “coring out” the erectile tissue to make space for the cylinders. Dr Ross Calopedos uses an erectile tissue preserving approach designed to respect the tissue that remains.
How the Technique Differs
Rather than aggressively dilating the erectile chambers, Dr Ross gently parts the tissue with a single pass of a measuring instrument. Nothing is removed from the penis. The implant cylinder is then guided into position through this carefully created pathway.
Why It Matters
The erectile tissue still contributes to natural fullness, blood flow and the appearance of the penis during arousal, even when it can no longer produce reliable rigidity on its own. Preserving this tissue:
- Helps maintain natural blood flow around the device during arousal
- Keeps the erectile tissue responsive to tablets where appropriate
- Can reduce pain and bleeding complications after surgery
The Principle Behind the Approach
The goal is not to hollow out the penis or replace what is still working, it is to preserve what remains functional and provide the reliable rigidity the penis can no longer produce by itself. In simple terms, the implant is there to restore what erectile dysfunction has taken away, while respecting your natural anatomy.
This technique is one part of Dr Ross’s broader approach to penile implant surgery. Learn more on the Penile Implants Overview page.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What Is Erectile Tissue Sparing Surgery?
It is a penile implant technique that avoids aggressively dilating or removing the erectile tissue. Instead, the tissue is gently parted to create a pathway for the implant cylinder, preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.
Why Is Preserving Erectile Tissue Beneficial?
Preserved erectile tissue continues to contribute to natural fullness, blood flow and appearance during arousal, and can remain responsive to tablets. Respecting the tissue may also reduce post-operative pain and bleeding.
