Specialist Erectile Dysfunction Treatment, Tailored to the Cause
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the persistent difficulty getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex. It affects a large proportion of Australian men, becoming more common with age and affecting more than half of men over 40, yet it is one of the most treatable conditions in men’s health.
Dr Ross Calopedos is a Sydney specialist urological surgeon with a dedicated focus on erectile dysfunction and men’s sexual health. ED is a symptom, not a diagnosis: rather than working through treatments by trial and error, he identifies why your erections have changed and matches the treatment to the cause.
Understanding ED, Symptoms and Causes
ED is rarely all-or-nothing. Some men cannot achieve an erection at all; others get one that will not stay firm, or that works only occasionally. Early signs can include the loss of regular morning erections, reduced firmness, or new changes such as curvature or a shorter, narrower penis.
Most erectile dysfunction has a physical basis, commonly involving blood flow, nerves, hormones or structural changes in the erectile tissue, often with a psychological component that develops over time. Because ED can be an early warning sign of cardiovascular disease or diabetes, proper assessment is about more than sexual function.

Accurate Diagnosis, Not Trial and Error
A firm erection depends on enough blood flowing into the penis and on the erectile tissue trapping that blood. Penile duplex (Doppler) ultrasound is the test that most reliably shows which part of that process has changed, distinguishing arterial inflow problems from veno-occlusive dysfunction (often called “venous leak”). Dr Ross performs this assessment in his Sydney clinic where appropriate, so treatment is targeted from the start rather than based on guesswork.
Erectile Dysfunction Treatment Options
Treatment is tailored to the cause and severity of your ED, your general health and your goals, and ranges from conservative measures through to definitive surgery: lifestyle and general health, oral medications (PDE5 inhibitors), injections and vacuum devices, penile rehabilitation, and penile implant surgery where other options are no longer reliable.

When Erectile Dysfunction Surgery Becomes the Answer
For many men, tablets and injections eventually become unreliable, inconvenient or ineffective, and intimacy becomes something to plan and worry about rather than enjoy. When that happens, a penile implant is the treatment that most reliably restores firm, on-demand erections, without depending on medication or timing. It is not a sign of failure; for the right patient it is a proactive decision to move from uncertainty back to confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can Erectile Dysfunction Be Cured?
It depends on the cause. Where ED is driven by reversible factors, treating the underlying issue can restore natural erections. Where the erectile tissue has changed and other treatments are no longer reliable, a penile implant provides a permanent, dependable solution. The first step is accurate diagnosis.
What Is the Most Effective Treatment for ED?
There is no single “best” treatment, because the most effective option depends on the underlying cause. Oral medications help many men; others do better with injections, and where these are no longer reliable, a penile implant offers the most consistent long-term result.
Is Erectile Dysfunction a Sign of Other Health Problems?
It can be. Because the blood vessels in the penis are small, vascular ED can appear before symptoms of cardiovascular disease elsewhere in the body, and it is closely linked with diabetes.
