A Definitive, Reliable Solution for Erectile Dysfunction
A penile implant (penile prosthesis) is a discreet, fully internal device that restores firm, reliable erections on demand. For men whose erectile dysfunction has not responded to tablets, injections or other measures, it is the treatment that most consistently restores spontaneous sexual function, and the only option that can also prevent further loss of penile length and deformity.
A penile implant is placed inside the two erectile chambers of the penis. It is completely concealed, does not affect urination or orgasm, and is designed so that sensation and appearance remain your own. Dr Ross Calopedos has built his Sydney practice around erectile restoration and prosthetic surgery, and after advanced international fellowship training he now performs one of the highest annual volumes of penile implant surgery in NSW.
Types of Penile Implant
There are two main types of penile implant. The right choice depends on your anatomy, hand function, lifestyle and goals, and Dr Ross will help you decide:
Inflatable penile prosthesis (IPP)
The most popular option, giving a natural erect and flaccid state using a concealed scrotal pump
Learn MoreWhy the Surgeon Matters More than the Device
A penile implant is a permanent device placed inside delicate anatomy, and the result depends far more on the surgeon, technique and aftercare than on the brand of implant. Dr Ross uses modern, minimally invasive, erectile-tissue-sparing techniques, including a concealed-access, single-incision infrapubic approach, and personally supports patients through recovery and device training. Most first-time patients are back to intimacy around three weeks after surgery.
Who Should Consider a Penile Implant?
A penile implant may be the right option if:
- Tablets no longer work reliably
- Injections are ineffective, painful, inconvenient or no longer acceptable
- You can get an erection but cannot maintain it
- You cannot achieve an erection firm enough for penetration
- You are noticing penile shortening, narrowing or curvature
- You have Peyronie’s disease together with erectile dysfunction
- Your erections have not recovered after prostate cancer treatment, pelvic surgery or radiotherapy
- You are tired of planning intimacy around medication timing

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Will a Penile Implant Feel and Look Natural?
Yes. The implant is completely internal, with no external parts. When deflated, an inflatable implant allows the penis to sit in a soft, natural-looking state. Sensation, arousal and orgasm remain your own.
How Long Do Penile Implants Last?
Modern implants are highly durable. With appropriate device selection, around 80% of inflatable implants are still working without issue at the 15-year mark, and a device can be replaced if needed.
How Long Is Recovery After Penile Implant Surgery?
Most first-time patients using Dr Ross’s minimally invasive approach are initiating intimacy around three weeks after surgery. Complex or revision cases may require around six weeks before device activation.
Do Patients Travel to Sydney for Surgery?
Yes. Men travel from regional Australia, interstate, New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific. A telehealth consultation is usually the first step before travelling.
